New Save The Date

One of my favorite things on the fridge right now is the save the date that just came from Laura & Steve. I saw one of my favorite things, because I can’t deny… We have a lot of cute stuff on there. I might also be biased because I helped Laura put these together. We wanted to tie it to their invites, but also make it fun! People need to know that they are to prepare for a PAR-TAY.

Other awesome-ness about the save the date… Adios & Ciao Ciao are their cake toppers. And I took the photo

Also – I know, I know, I haven’t posted in FOREVER! I am sorry! New things are in the works and I am keeping busy, busy, busy! But I’ll be trying to get back into the swing of things slowly, but surely.

I have been working hard on rebuilding my website and wanted to share a sneak peak of the results! I am really excited about the album layout slideshow made possible by the incredible Show It! They are also the incredible company that I have to thank for my album design order form. While I had to build the form myself, Show It takes care of all the hard stuff form me (coding)!

starlet excitement

I cannot wait to post more about this book soon! I had a great time working on it and was very excited when the cover transformed from a typical album cover with a photo….to this:

Our inspiration was vintage suitcases with travel stickers on them. It was so much fun to see all the different stickers people have saved over the years and collections of stickers and fonts out there. The Starlet Sessions by Kamila Harris are vintage inspired fashion shoots. She hosts them in her studio in Philadelphia and on location in Wildwood, NJ. I had a ton of fun designing each sticker using some of the favorites from the many Starlet Sessions. And even more fun was modifying Kamila’s logo so that she now has a Starlet Sessions logo. I love fonts, especially deco-inspired anything, so this was a treat of a project!

More from the book to come soon! There is a Starlet Session scheduled for October 31 in Kamila’s Chestnut Hill Studio. Check it out!

She might possibly be my favorite photographer to work with. But who doesn’t love working with people that are awesome? I had to wait to post this because she was getting so many hits to her new site it was shutting down! She is a popular girl….what can I say?

I was so excited when Kamila asked for my help with her new website design. I am definitely not a web designer…flash, java, all that fancy stuff….woooooo. My brain doesn’t work that way. But a splash screen to tell her clients immediately that she is great, and what kind of awesome she is….that I can do

Kamila LOVES older cameras and experimenting with film. I wanted to portray what makes her different immediately, but also show the beautiful style she brings out in each image she takes.

She is doing some great stuff and getting ready to move into a new studio. So check out her blog to keep up on all the crazy happenings!

As you may know, I occasionally post to the entertainment blog My Latest Distraction. It is a fun site. A collaboration of friends. A place to talk about anything on your mind. Although the boys may not admit it, we love pop culture. They love some parts, I love the others. Mostly, it ends up as comics and movies. But there is always some fun to be had with food, television, current events, and life in general. A recent comic post by my husband led to a fun project for me that I wanted to share. If you want to read about the covers and understand them, check out the post.

Break Even is a micro-label based out of Philadelphia, Pa. It was founded in 1997 by my husband! When he went back to school, BE had to calm down a bit. But recently it has been going strong with quite a few recent releases.

Please take a minute to check out the Break Even site. Or better yet, add yourself as a fan on the Facebook page. There can’t be a custom URL through Facebook until Break Even has 1000 fans…so tell all your friends!!! And please let us know what you think of the new BE look!

amateur v. professional

Recently, I have stumbled upon a few different articles and websites out there on the inter-web, that have bugged me to say the least.
One article was titled something along the lines of “10 steps to being a graphic designer” and opened with the statement that education was a waste. Everything you need to know about graphic design can be found on the internet. In a way, sure, this might be true. I could probably find almost everything I learned in school online, but, I would have had no idea what to look for.

Sites out there like The Design Cubicle are not meant to be a graphic design education for an accountant who needs to create a business card, or for an author who needs a book cover. They are a tool for designers. Tuesday, I read an article about what separates a professional from an amateur. I loved every single thing on the list, and highly recommend taking a look, but want to highlight the point that a professional is constantly educating themselves and seeking to learn. That is what these websites should be used for, not so that anyone can call themselves a designer.

Now, I don’t want to say that having an education makes one a better designer than someone without the degree to back them up. This is not at all what I am saying. There are great designers that did not study design, and there are plenty of horrible designers who did. It is simply frustrating to see the pool of talent that you are a part of to be diluted by someone who decides to title themselves a designer. (for more on this)

Today, the site I came across was the icing on the cake for this topic. The offering of pre-made logos on sale for less than $50. Just simply pick from the cutesy designs available and they will change the name to your name. You can even change the color of the text if you want! What happened to typography being one of the most important elements of graphic design? If there is any wording involved in a design, good typography is key! How every letter works together with the design is so important to a successful trademark.

Please tell me I am not the only one who thinks this trend in creative areas is frustrating!
